SPOTLIGHTS U GO GIRL | 17 YEAR OLD PAINT MARE | CORPUS CHRISTI,TX
Roxie, Spotlights U Go Girl, is a Paint Mare bred by Red Fox Farm. Her sire is The Spotlight and APHA Champion Jumper. Her dam is a Thoroughbred.
Roxie, is the one eyed peanut butter cracker eating wonder of CEC Elite Training in Corpus Christi,TX. She rules the barn with an iron hoof and keeps her brother and neighbor Dino in line. She only has one eye because she lost it when she developed Uvietis 9 years ago. She was able to continue to compete after the surgery and continued to be successful in the show ring. Roxie is extremely trusting and would go to battle for Chloe Cosgrove. Chloe says, “She is more human like than horse like.” The perfect word to describe Roxie is trusting, although she can’t see on one side she is still so patient with everyone that is around her. I can honestly say that she was so incredibly great about me working around her even when I was on her side where she couldn’t see me.
Back in her day, Roxie was a dressage horse Chloe competed on to second level. Before that she was a jumper, but once she lost her eye Chloe decided it was better for her to just do dressage. She now teaches lessons to little kids at CEC Elite Training. Chloe’s favorite thing about riding her is how easy her lateral work is, all you have to do is think about what you want to do and she does it.
Chloe met Roxie when she was training with a paint horse trainer and started looking for a new horse. Chloe was 12 and her trainer got on a horse who was bucking a kid off; the horse had been turned out in a field for a year and the owners decided it was time to sell her. Chloe’s Mom and her drove to her trainer’s place and tried her late that evening. Chloe said, “I got on and jumped a few courses and she was perfect. Roxie was about 150 pounds under weight and shaggy looking but I still fell in love. I tried her again the next morning and she was perfect so we brought her home with us!”
I always say that we are put through so many incredibly trials in this life, and somehow in this crazy world we live in they always come full circle and make sense in the end. The story of how one buck (ok, it may have been a few) changed Chloe’s life forever is the perfect example of this. This is one of Chloe’s favorite memories of the two of them.
If only all of us ended up with amazing opportunities every time we had been bucked off at a clinic..wait don’t tell me you haven’t even been bucked off in one the biggest lessons of your life?!
Chloe was taking a lesson with Kathleen Keller from Germany while in Rhode Island at school, and what was supposed to be a day full of learning quickly turned around when Roxie decided to take off bucking just a few minutes into her ride. “When she bucked me off five minutes into my ride with a trainer from Germany. I got up and wanted to continue in the lesson but I realized I had broken a finger when it was going the wrong way. They rushed me to the hospital but when I went back to watch the next day she asked me if I wanted to move to Germany and work for her trainer. My response was but I fell off and she told me that I proved I was tough and she knew I could ride. So I sent a video of me riding to her trainer and got the job. A job, I had no idea what is actually was, but I got it and had a place to live. This job turned into something amazing and has provided so many opportunities I would have never had if Roxie hadn’t bucked me off in that lesson.”
