Marano, RL Monte Marano, is a beautiful 12-year-old Warmblood gelding ridden by Julia Moskey, who rides at Seery Hill.
Marano is equal parts goofy and grumpy—especially in the mornings. He’s a people-lover through and through but isn’t quite as fond of other horses. He has his chosen humans and would prefer to keep it that way. He definitely knows how handsome he is but still needs those daily reminders that he’s a very good boy. While cookies and people food are always appreciated, his favorite place to be is out in turnout soaking up the sun.
One of Julia’s favorite memories came during their very first week together. While on trial at HITS Saugerties, they discovered Marano’s surprising love for ice cream. An ice cream truck had parked at the showgrounds, and when offered a bar, Marano didn’t hesitate—he took the entire thing right off the stick! It was love at first lick, and from that moment, Julia knew he was the one.
Their story began when Marano showed up at her barn leased by another rider. Julia took videos of him and begged to try him, but the timing wasn’t quite right. Six months later, fate intervened—Marano returned to the barn. Julia got her chance, showed him that week, and brought him home. They’ve been a perfect match ever since.
His favorite treat? Ice cream—especially on a hot day—and pretty much anything else offered by his people.
Julia grew up around horses and began riding at a young age with her aunt. After taking a break, she jumped back in during her sophomore year of high school by buying her first horse. Over the past five years, she’s had several horses who helped her evolve from a nervous long stirrup rider into a confident adult hunter. Her favorite part of horse ownership? Knowing she gets to see her best friend at the end of every long day—and always leaving the barn with a smile.
