365 Days of Horses | Wesley | Princeville, Kauai

WILD WILD WEST | 27 YEAR OLD HANOVERIAN THOROUGHBRED CROSS | GEORGETOWN,KY

Wesley, Wild Wild West, is a 27 year old Hanoverian Thoroughbred cross. He was bred by Helen Savage at Fox Fire Farm in Princeville, Kauai. His Hanoverian side is Walzer by the Woermann line, on the Thoroughbred side he traces back to War Admiral and is a great grandson of Man O War.

Wesley is retired and lives at home with his owner Ashley in Georgetown,KY. Wesley is full of personality. He is very opinionated and not afraid to let you know it. He is a ladies man and has been used to tease breeding mares when they wouldn’t respond to the stallion. He knows how to say ‘yes’ and has even been on a ship and airplane, and trailered across the country. Wesley was born in Kauai and he hates peacocks. The first barn they boarded at had peacocks that flew out of the trees. I can honestly say this is a first, but I can imaging how terrifying that would be! He even has a son that still lives on Kauai.

Wesley is retired now but was a hunter back in the day. He was an amazing jumper and loved it. The pair tried dressage but he wanted no part of it. In the pair’s one and only dressage show, Wesley refused to halt at X, every time. Wesley has also done western and greatly enjoyed chasing cows around.

Ashley shares the story about how she found Wesley, “I had tried 3 other horses before I found Wesley. Two didn’t pass the vet and one literally tried to kill me. A boarder at the barn, I was taking lessons at, mentioned she knew of a horse on Kauai for sale. We set up the appointment and flew over (we lived on Oahu) to go meet him. It was love at first sight. I got out of the car and saw a bay horse sticking his head out of a stall in the corner, I didn’t even know if he was the horse we were here to see. I walked over to him, as if a magnet was pulling me, and when I got to him he put his head on my chest and that was that! This was my horse, my other half. That was 22 years ago. We bought him and had him shipped to Oahu where he was boarded at a barn inside an extinct volcano crater.”

This amazing horse loves Guavas and Berry Hay Cubes.

I think every horse girls story starts out about the same way, of wanting to ride but her parents not letting her, “I always wanted to ride but for a long time my parents wouldn’t let me. Finally in middle school I started taking lessons and a year and a half later I got my first horse, Wesley. I love owning and taking care of horses, it was what I was born to do. My life revolves around the horses, I met my husband because of my horses and my job is as a manager of a horse farm. I owe everything to them and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”

“There are so many stories I love, but my favorite has to be the day we first met. It’s an incredible experience meeting your soul mate for the first time and having an instant connection. It was almost like we already knew each other, it was definitely ment to be. We were magnets drawn to each other from the moment we first laid eyes on each other. When he laid his head on my chest that sealed the deal. I was a nervous wreck waiting for the vetting results and then had to wait two weeks for him to ship over to Oahu.”

Ashley also shares, “Spend time with them, grooming or just sitting with them. You get such a deeper understanding of who they are, their personality. Do this as often as you can. You don’t want you horse to see you as only there to ride them. Give treats often you never know how long you have, you won’t regret it.”
