MI DEEP PLEASURE | 9 YEAR OLD AMERICAN PAINT HORSE MARE | VERSAILLES,KY
Krikit, Mi Deep Pleasure, is a 9 year old Quarter Horse Mare. She is out of Mi Deep Cedar and by Justa Pleasure. She was bred to be a pleasure horse.
Krikit is owned by Brett, and lives at Golden Ratio Farm, a small farm in Versailles,KY. This mare is absolutely a one of a kind horse, and after spending just a short time with her I fell in love. She is a sweetheart on the ground, and loves to be curious and investigate things. A few years ago Brett taught her to give kisses, and it is the cutest thing ever. Under saddle, Krikit is really fiery and particular. Brett calls her a “baby dragon.”
Brett considers them “wannabe eventers,” they like to have fun together and jump but Brett says she is a chicken so they don’t jump very high. Krikit is a very fancy mover when she is working hard, so they have also enjoyed trying out dressage.
“My favorite part about riding her is that she keeps me on my toes. Every ride is a new adventure. I was a pretty timid rider when I first started riding her. She was only three and definitely took advantage of my insecurity. Ride after ride ended disastrously, even after having a trainer put thirty more days on her for me. I was already in love with her though, so I buckled down and worked harder. A lot of blood, sweat and tears has gone into this relationship. She has made me so brave; I wouldn’t be the rider I am today without her. Where I used to be wary of getting on her, now even our bad rides feel like coming home.”
This pair has been together for six years. Brett shares, “It’s crazy how time flies when you’re having fun! I actually traded a different horse for her and did everything wrong bringing her home. No PPE, no test ride. The only time I had ever even seen her was a short video of her lunging and a handful of pictures. We just showed up, pulled horses off trailers, swapped papers and headed home.”
“I remember the first time I saw her like it was yesterday. She stepped off the trailer and my heart sunk down into my knees. She was much smaller than I had thought at only around 14.2 and looked like such a baby. I wanted to turn around and throw her back on the trailer but my trainer assured me that she was built well and we could work with her. I already said I had been really timid so instead of speaking up, I listened to my trainer and brought her home anyway. The rest is history! She’s grown two or three inches since bringing her home and gained around 300 pounds.”
This quirky red headed mare, is pretty particular about everything, but she loves Peppermints.
“I think our biggest accomplishment is from our first combined training last summer! We pulled 6th out of 17 riders and put in the best dressage test we’ve ever ridden (eventing score of 29.1!!). It may not seem like that big of a deal but at our first show, we never even made it in the ring because she was so worked up and scared about being off property. To not only make it in the ring, but pull 6th out of 17 was a huge deal! I was so proud and still am!”
Brett has been riding since she was in 5th grade. She has ridden both english and wester, mostly with eventers and reiners. She bought her first horse when she was sixteen, and started working 30 hours per week at their local McDonald’s to pay for her. She shares, “Owning my own horse is probably my proudest accomplishment. I’ve done it all by myself. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s so rewarding. I still get butterflies in my stomach everytime I say the words “my horse”. It’s a really big deal for me.”
“I think my favorite part about owning my own horse is the relationship we have. It’s hard work and can definitely be emotionally (as well as financially) draining, but there’s nothing like the relationship I have with this horse.”
“My favorite memory of Krikit is from about a week and a half to two weeks after I brought her home. I had sold my first horse a few months before hand and fell into this really deep depression. She had sustained an injury that was going to keep her from doing what I wanted. I hated myself for selling her and was really not okay for a long time. I was driving back to the barn to feed Krikit one afternoon and started thinking about my first mare. I came into the barn crying and hugged her. She immediately pinned her ears and wheeled backwards away from me, giving me this look that seemed to say “why are you touching me? Don’t hug me. We don’t even know each other yet. Pull yourself together, dumb human” It was the same thing my first mare did and something about it just made things click. I wasn’t immediately okay again, but I was drastically improved. Krikit pulled me out of the dark place I was in and I’m so grateful to her. We have our moments for sure (she is a red mare after all) but she is definitely my heart horse.”
I love the advice Brett shares about owning a horse, “Listen to your horse and put the time in on the ground. The riding will come and go, it can’t be the most important part of your relationship with them.”
