Vermillion’s Hero is a 26-year-old Quarter Horse registered with the AQHA who resides in Lindsay, OK, and goes by Murphy. He is owned and cared for by Jewell. He has completed his showing career and is headed home to enjoy his golden years.
Murphy is a kind-eyed, quiet soul Chestnut gelding with a big white blaze that almost covers his entire nose. Also, if you look closely at his eye, you will notice he has a bright spot, which makes his eyes glisten. He is the kind of horse every little girl dreams of calling their own and Jewell has been lucky enough to be his partner for the last 5 years. She was scared to ride after a bad accident on a pony so when she met Murphy nine months later she was a bit hesitant to get on such a big horse. However, within 5 minutes she just melted into him and was jumping again.
He believes in his rider so that they can gain the confidence to believe in themselves. He has been an amputee’s mount after she lost her leg to cancer, then a backup horse for a girl who lost her horse, and helped bring Jewell back to the love of riding. He has a special talent for helping his riders feel safe in his saddle.
He has been to many shows from New York, Colorado, Las Vegas National Finals, and many more. He has acquired championships all over the nation and yet he stays humble and loyal to his rider. Murphy has a good mind and a heart that seems to remove the stress of life for his rider. He is a true hero to many who have been blessed to have had a chance to ride and learn from him. He can catch a nap anywhere and anytime. He loves to be read to and his face and eyes to be softly rubbed. He will follow Jewell anywhere and is always her protector in and out of the arena. Walks in the pasture with Jewell are his favorite.
Jewell began riding at age two and has been hooked ever since. She got her first horse when she was 3 and has had horses for 8 years. Jumping has always been her interest. Jewell loves everything about horses from their smell, gracefulness, and all the different and unique breeds and colors.
Did you know horses have bigger eyes than any other land mammal? They also have a third eyelid which lies on the inside of the eye and closes diagonally over it for added protection.

Portraits for Charity was an idea Karinda dreamt up to help give back to families impacted by Childhood Cancer in memory of her husband’s sister Jessica. During the 2021 Pin Oak Charity Horse Show Karinda photographed around 140 Horses, Dogs, and even Goats, and was able to donate $10,000 to Candlelighter’s Houston. These are the stories of the Horses, Dogs, and Goats that were photographed at the show, these stories complement a photographic book that Karinda is printing and donating to Texas Children’s Hospital featuring Portraits of each and every animal she photographed.
