ODYSSEY | 6 YEAR OLD IRISH DRAUGHT | CARENCRO, LA

Ollie, Odyssey, is an Irish Draught Gelding. His sire is Rebel Mountain who is by Grandpas Rebel. Ollie trains with Brooke Miller Equestrian in Carencro, LA.

Ollie, the dapple grey horse with a pink spot on his nose and white tail, is a unique individual with several charming traits. One of the best things about him is his human-loving, dog-like personality which makes him a joy to be around. He’s incredibly mellow and doesn’t get easily rattled by new environments, usually just stopping and looking when he does get spooked. Ollie is the kind of horse who will come up to you in the pasture, snooze in the crossties, rest his head on your shoulder, and eagerly tilt his head for treats.

Although Ollie can be a bit lazy, he’s an excellent jumper with a stride big enough to cross the lines. He’s also very sensitive to his rider’s balance and presence, sometimes even wanting his handheld. However, he doesn’t like too much of anything if his rider is unbalanced. All in all, Ollie’s four socks and pink spot might catch your eye, but it’s his easy-going personality and sensitivity that makes him truly unique.

Kate, Ollie’s owner, stumbled upon him through a Facebook ad in Kentucky. At first, she bought him sight unseen but later decided to take him for a trial ride. Although Kate initially thought he was “extremely grey” and a “literal potato on sticks,” Ollie’s charming personality quickly won her over. Despite a less-than-perfect trial ride, Kate fell in love with his relaxed demeanor and puppy-dog personality. She’s been proud to call Ollie her own since June 2021, and they’ve been inseparable for almost two years.

Ollie doesn’t discriminate when it comes to treats – he loves them all! Ollie is always eager to munch on anything tasty. His human-loving, dog-like personality means he’s always willing to tilt his head in anticipation of his next snack. It’s hard to resist his adorable antics when he’s eagerly awaiting a treat with his big, beautiful eyes.

Ollie has achieved some impressive accomplishments during his time in the show ring. He’s earned several ribbons at Gulfport in the 2’6″ division, showcasing his jumping abilities and calm demeanor. But Ollie isn’t done yet! His owner, Kate, is hopeful that he’ll continue to shine and bring home even more ribbons at Pin Oak. Ollie’s laid-back personality and willingness to please everyone make him a joy to watch in the ring, and it’s clear that the duo makes a fantastic team. With his talent and his dedicated owner by his side, there’s no doubt that Ollie will continue to impress and achieve great things in the future.

Kate’s love for horseback riding began eight years ago when she was introduced to the sport by a friend. Since then, she’s been hooked and has been riding ever since. Kate decided to take the plunge and become a horse owner, and now she’s been the astonished owner of Ollie for almost two years. One of the things Kate enjoys most about riding horses is the ability to create her own schedule for rides, as well as the personal aspect of having a loving partner. For Kate, there’s nothing quite like the bond she shares with Ollie, and she cherishes every moment spent with him.

Kate and Ollie share a special bond, but one of her favorite memories with him is from just a few weeks ago. They were out for a hack, and after a 40-degree temperature drop, Ollie was feeling frisky. Despite his best efforts to get her off, Kate was able to work through Ollie’s excitement and continue their ride. However, just when she thought they had it all under control, Ollie surprised her with an impressive buck, and Kate came off. Despite the fall, Kate found the situation funny, and Ollie immediately walked toward her apologetically. This happened just before their last show, where they successfully moved up to the 3’0″ division. Kate realized that the fall, which normally would have shaken her confidence, actually foreshadowed an amazing show weekend. This memory is a testament to Kate and Ollie’s strong partnership and their ability to handle anything that comes their way with humor and grace.
