“Homer has several different quirks about him. He is a cribber. My first cribber and my only one right now, he seems to be the worst one!! We had to design a special stall for him to where there is absolutely nothing he can crib on, but he still trys! He can be lovey at times but then he gets over it and wants to be by himself. We pick on eachother all the time, but at the end of the day I love him more than anything!” The pair rides with Mackenzie’s mom Brooke.

Mackenzie rides him at least twice a week to keep him tuned up, one of the best perks of him living at FitHorse is that he gets swam several times a week so that he can stay in top shape without having to put added strain on his joints. Because of his age this is super important so that they can extend his career. He has a bad knee so swimming is the best way to let him stretch out and get exercise without straining him. Mackenzie’s favorite thing about riding him is that he is very spirited and she calls him her “fire breathing dragon” when she gets on him he is always ready to go which is great for a barrel horse.

Mackenzie found Homer because one of the girls her grandmother used to help ride owned Homer for several years and did really well on him at pro rodeos. His former owner had decided to sell him and came to her grandmother with Mackenzie in mind. “I loved him from day one.” This February will make four years that Mackenzie has owner Homer. He was her Valentine’s gift that year. I think that may be the best Valentines day gift ever.

Mackenzie shares her story about how she got into riding horses, “I have been around horses before I was even born! My family has had horses since my Grandfather was young. I had my first horse at the age of three. But horses and I didn’t always get along the best. When I was in the first grade I was in a horse accident and I broke my left arm, that set me back pretty far and didn’t really care to rodeo until my sixth grade year. And since then there hasn’t been a day since I haven’t done something with a horse. The horses I have now mean the world to me, and I am so blessed to have them!”

Mackenzie’s best kept secret to keeping her horses clean is using Quench when she bathes them. “It’s an awesome shampoo and conditioner, my horses always smell great and their manes and tails stay looking good.”

Mackenzie’s favorite memory with Homer is when they won their first check together at a Barrel Race in Gonzalez, Texas. It was a cold day but Homer still pulled it off!
