BLUE SAPHIRE | 4 YEAR – OLD WELSH CROSS MARE | RICHMOND, TX
Saffy, Blue Saphire, is a 4-year-old Welsh Cross mare. She is a rose gray beauty with a distinctive sock on her back right leg. Saffy lives at a friend’s place where Ryder Coll ensures she receives all the love and attention she craves.
Saffy is known for her super sweet personality and curious nature. She always wants to be loved and is very selective with her treats, preferring only one specific type. “Saffy is super sweet and very curious. She just wants to be loved all the time,” Ryder says. Saffy’s personality is truly unique, and her affectionate nature makes her a joy to be around.
Ryder rides Saffy, focusing on developing her skills and preparing her for shows. “My favorite thing about riding Saffy is her willingness to learn and her eagerness to please,” Ryder shares. Saffy’s positive attitude makes every ride a delightful experience.
The pair first met through a Facebook post. Ryder and their family decided to take a chance on a skinny 3-year-old with only 30 days of training. “We decided to take a chance on her, and I am so glad we did,” Ryder shares. Since then, Saffy has blossomed under Ryder’s care and training.
Saffy is very particular about her treats. Her favorite treat is Mrs. Pasture cookies. Interestingly, she also likes the icing of frosted horse treats but nothing else. “I always make sure to have her favorite treats stocked,” Ryder says.
Saffy has just started showing and does not have any major accomplishments yet. However, Ryder has high hopes for her future. “I hope one day she will have many accomplishments,” Ryder adds.
Ryder first got into horses because of a friend’s birthday party about 8-9 years ago. Since then, Ryder has never looked back and has leased many horses before Saffy, who is the second horse Ryder owns. “My favorite thing about owning a horse is the unique relationship I get to create with them, which wouldn’t be possible with a lesson or lease horse,” Ryder explains.
“My favorite memory about Saffy would probably be when we went to Young Pony Championships during the summer of 2023. It was her first A show and I was super proud of how she dealt with everything and exceeded all my expectations that weekend. Also, it was the first time she opened up her personality and she trusted me enough to lay down next to me when I was sitting in her stall,” Ryder recalls.

Portraits for Charity was an idea Karinda dreamt up to help give back to families impacted by Childhood Cancer in memory of her husband’s sister Jessica. With the help of the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show family, Karinda has raised over $30,000 for Candlelighter’s Houston since starting this project.
