SOMETHING SCANDALOUS | 9 YEAR OLD SADDLEBRED | BELLVILLE, TX

Sophie, Something Scandalous, is a Saddlebred Mare. Her sire is Chosholosa and her dam is Time to Win who is by CH Caramac. Sophie lives and trains with Sandra Currier at Bluebonnet Farm in Bellville, TX.

Sophie is a unique black horse with a little bit of white on her left hind coronet. She is known for being the “boss mare,” meaning she takes charge in a pasture with other horses. Sophie has a playful nature but understands boundaries that cannot be crossed. She loves structure and discipline, making her very athletic and fun to work with. She excels in doing serpentines, both driving and under saddle, and can turn quickly. Sophie is typically ridden in Hunt Seat, but sometimes she forgets and wants to be a fire-breathing saddle seat horse. People working at the farm have been intimidated by her. Riding Sophie has never created a dull moment, and she requires riders to be ready to work when they get on her.

Melissa, Sophie’s owner, found Sophie in a unique way – she bred her. Sophie has been a part of Melissa’s life for all 9 of her years. From the moment Sophie was born, she had a special attitude and an “aire” about her that made it clear she was the queen. However, this can sometimes be challenging when it comes to reminding her who is really in charge. Despite these challenges, Melissa loves Sophie and enjoys having her as a part of her life.

This boss mare has a sweet tooth, and her favorite treats are carrots, apples, and peppermints. However, baby carrots are her absolute favorite. While she will eat larger carrots, if they are not sweet enough, she will spit them out.

Sophie has some impressive accomplishments to her name. She has won several regional awards, and while she mostly competes at local shows in Texas, her talent and ability have not gone unnoticed. Melissa is incredibly proud of Sophie’s achievements and hopes to take her on the road to bigger competitions in the future. However, for now, Melissa is focusing on Sophie’s younger brother Finn and they are taking on the show world together. Nevertheless, Sophie’s future is bright, and there is no doubt that she will continue to shine in the competition ring.

When Melissa’s daughter turned six years old, their shared love for horses began to blossom. They took lessons together and eventually started competing in horse shows. After Melissa’s daughter went to college, Melissa took over the mare she used to show and even tried breeding her. They had three foals, two of which are now successful show horses. Although raising horses is a lot of work, Melissa finds it therapeutic and relaxing for her soul. She treasures the connections she has with her horses and enjoys observing their unique personalities in the pasture. Melissa’s passion for horses has grown into a significant part of her life, and she deeply values the time she spends with them.

Melissa has many cherished memories with all her horses, but Sophie holds a special place in her heart. One of Melissa’s favorite memories of Sophie was when they were on the farm with the cattle. Sophie loved to be entertained by the calves and would often chase them around. One time, she chased a five-month-old steer into a fence, causing the calf to flip over it. Although Melissa scolded her, Sophie was proud of her achievement and slowly trotted off, flagging her tail and prancing to the back of the pasture. Fortunately, the calf was unharmed, but Melissa knew it was time to take Sophie to Bluebonnet for some professional training.
