Meet Seeker, “Lupin”, who is a very young 2 years old. Lupin is smokey black with no markings yet. He is owned and loved by Kayla Larson who trains with Tracey Badley-Walton out of Spellbound Farm in Van Alstyne, TX.
Lupin was bred by Kayla, he is by Sagar, and is out of her Thoroughbred mare “Leviosa”. Kayla decided to breed her mare after she got hurt and had to be retired. She was there when Lupin was born and met him the moment he came into the world.
It is a hard task to choose just one memory when asked to choose your favorite memory between you and your horse, especially having been there for his delivery. But, Kayla says with that aside, it had to be his first horse show. She had very few expectations being that it was the first time trailering that far plus he was alone. Once they arrived she said he was perfect. Even when other horses were being lunged in the area, one horse even got loose – he was as cool as a cucumber. All Lupin really cared about was munching on some hay in the meantime. Kayla shares that after he showed once more, she still kept her expectations low. He turned out to be incredibly well-behaved and even won his class receiving “Best Young Horse” of all the young horses there!
This made Kayla extremely giddy about their future together. Kayla shares, “Lupin’s mom never liked shows when I was riding her so I just really wanted to do these to give him a positive experience for the future. He will take one front leg and cross it over and use it to scratch the other leg. He started doing this when he was less than 2 weeks old. My mare, his mother, also does this.”
Lupin loves most regular horse treats and Rice Krispie’s Treats. He is also a fan of Kayla’s homemade horse treats that she makes him!
“I always wanted to ride but didn’t have the opportunity to really start riding until high school when I became a working student. I rode whatever horses I could and then midway through college I started working for Spellbound Farm. I would drive up from College Station most weekends to work and ride. When I graduated and started full-time in 2018, I purchased my very first horse, Fleur, her show name Leviosa. Unfortunately, she got hurt not long after I bought her, but then was cleared to breed by our vet, and that is how I got Lupin. My favorite thing about owning horses is just spending time with them, grooming them, or taking them for walks and knowing everything about them.”
