Oakley | Texas Fine Art Dog Portraits

Oakley is a black and grey Australian Cattle Dog & Catahoula Mix. She was rescued by her owner Crystal and lives in Missouri.

Oakley was a rescue dog, and she had a rough past. When Crystal first rescued her she was so scared and nervous. It took nearly two years for her to open up and really let her guard down and play. Once she realized life with Crystal was truly amazing, she became extremely loving and loyal, but at the same time, she is quirky and has special things that she likes and dislikes. Crystal shared that she typically loves boy dogs because just like Mares (girl horses), girl dogs can have a little extra attitude. However, Oakley changed that for her with her loyalty and how hard she loves her Mom.

Crystal first met Oakley at a pet adoption at Petsmart. She said, “You know those adoption events held on Saturdays at Petsmart? The ones you don’t go to because you’ll want to come home with every dog there? Well, that’s where I found Oakley.” Crystal works as a vet tech at a vet clinic, so she has gotten really good about resisting the urge to take all of the puppies home, but when she saw this scared little puppy she knew she had to take her home. Her little face, and pointy with her big head pulled at her heart so much.

This loyal dog loves anything meaty.

Crystal has had dogs her entire life but this was her first experience with a herding breed dog. Anyone who has owned a dog like this knows they are incredibly special in their own right. They tend to be overly loyal to their owners and have a fierce personality and focus that has been passed down in the herding dog breeds. They get overly excited about tiny things and are able to work for hours on end when they are trained. Since Oakley has some Australian Cattle Dog in her she has a natural instinct to herd cattle, some people who own dogs that are part Australian Cattle Dog will see their dogs herding people, kids, or random animals because they love to do it so much. Herding is when a dog goes behind a cow and encourages the cow to move in a specific direction by nudging, barking, or circling the cow.

Did you know that the unique Catahoula leopard dog breed originated in the state of Louisiana?
