Louisville Kentucky Equine Photographer | Tiger the Buckskin Paint
Tiger, That Smokin Skeeter, is a Buckskin Tobiano American Paint Horse Mare. Tiger is a registered APHA, she has Roping, Halter, and Cutting Horses in her bloodlines.
Tiger is owned by Adele Shaw of The Willing Equine in Spicewood,TX. Adele shares her horses training journey on her Instagram feed, make sure you head over and follow her page so that you can follow along with their journey. Tiger is currently in re-training from previously failed barrel racing training. Adele’s goals for her include western dressage, ranch riding, trail riding, and just being an all around trustworthy mount.
Tiger also happens to win the award for sleepiest horse photographed so far this year, she just yawned and yawned during her session and was so incredibly relaxed. I think it was from the long day of pampering and grooming she had to undergo before her pictures, being a superstar horse is tough work!
Adele shares, “Tiger has been a huge teacher in my life. She’s help change the way I look at and work with horses. Her personality is very sensitive and willing, but she becomes easily overwhelmed and frustrated when presented with new challenges. Her past homes left her untrusting of humans in general, it’s been a huge learning curve for both of us to mentally and emotionally bring her back to a place where she trusts humans to help her learn, but she’s trying very hard and is making tremendous progress.”
“I found Tiger at a barn where we went to visit another horse that was for sale about 3 1/2 years ago. When I saw a beautiful buckskin paint sitting out in the pasture I was interested immediately and asked if she was for sale. Thankfully she was! It was love at first sight, even though buying her wasn’t the wisest decision. I was looking for a reliable trail horse for a family member at the time and Tiger was anything but relaxed and reliable. We found that out as soon as she tried to buck my sister clear off when she got startled. But I just felt this strong draw to her and really believed she was meant to come home with us.”
When I asked Adele to describe Tiger in one word she said, “Complex.”
Adele started riding at a summer camp when she was eight years old, from there it was a never ending obsession that her parents *hoped* she would outgrow. “I started taking lessons at a hunter/jumper barn right down the street from my house for 7 or 8 years. Showing, training, and doing absolutely anything and everything horse related. From there I got into dressage for many years, competing and showing with some of the best. But my true passion was really on working with retraining “problem” horses.”
“I started working with trainer just out of the city that specialized in rehabilitation cases and difficult horses. I learned so much from her and still continue to do so.Fast forward many years I somehow find myself venturing into the world of western riding, but of course I have to drag my love of dressage with me. One day I do hope to explore eventing and other disciplines as well, but my focus will primarily be on the mental and physical development of all kinds of horses in all different disciplines and stages of life. Seeking humane and alternative methods of training to better the lives of our equine partners.”
“I have a lot of favorite memories with Tiger, she’s been a very special part of my life and has taught me so much. But I would have to say my favorite memories are when she first started coming to me to be caught from the pasture sometime about a year after owning her. When we first brought her home she refused to be caught and would take a couple hours to get out of a pasture, and in her stall she used to stand nervously in a corner while being haltered. She just didn’t trust humans. Her old owners used to have to lasso her out of the pasture. Even after being with us for awhile she wouldn’t want to approach a human unless her pasture mate was approaching us with her. But after a lot of patient consistent work together all of that started to change. She began to approach me without her pasture mate and without running off, eager to spend time together. It was a huge moment in our relationship and I will never forget it.”
