Louisville Kentucky Equine Photographer | Rosie the Quarter Horse
Rosie, Clever Move, is an Appendix Quarter Horse Mare. Her sire was a Thoroughbred, Dantrick (Clever Trick x Shasta Danelle), and her dam was a Quarter Horse, Rowdys Pretty Lass (Pretty N Rowdy x Jaybos Daisy Mae). Some of the more notable racehorses on the top side of Rosie’s pedigree include Native Dancer, War Admiral, Man O War, and Fair Play. Rosie’s dam produced 5 quarter horse foals and her lineage goes back to the halter legend Impressive.
Rosie’s owner Charlie shares, “While horses who carry the Impressive line are at risk for HYPP, Rosie is thankfully N/N. This is important to me as I did not want to consider breeding her at all if she was only a HYPP carrier even though I will only consider a HYPP N/N stallion.”
“Rosie is an amazingly perfect partner for me. We are so well matched, it’s scary at times. She is strong but can yield. She is protective, curious, and has an incredible work ethic that won’t let her quit no matter how hard our new lesson is. She is dependable in her work. She is my confidant who listens to my troubles and unconditionally comforts me.”
The pair primarily does Dressage. They also do Western Dressage, English, and Western as well as Pleasure Driving together.
I just love the story of how this pair ended up together, although they had a bit of a bumpy start the pair stuck it out now they have blossomed into an awesome pair. “An instructor I was with traded a pony and a small amount of cash for Rosie. I was outgrowing the pony I had been leasing and so it was decided I would begin leasing Rosie at the end of the current show season. The first time I rode Rosie was very traumatic for me. I had spent the last year training and competing a pony that I had become very attached to. I was accustomed to riding short, and sometimes choppy, pony strides. The first time I rode Rosie, she didn’t know how to turn or stop. And, while she had a big, beautiful “rocking-horse” canter, it was so different from the pony canter I had been riding for the past year that I cried for the pony I would never ride again. My mom encouraged me to stick with Rosie and to grow my skills with the training she would need and I did. I leased Rosie for almost 6 months before my instructor needed to sell her and my mom was able to purchase her. Rosie has been with me for over 9 years now.”
When I asked Charlie to describe Rosie in one word she said “Rosebud.”
Rosie likes to bob for apples in her water bucket. She also enjoys The German Horse Muffin treats and mints from Sonic Drive-In.
In 2013, Rosie was the Reserve AQHA High-Point winner for Youth First Level Dressage, and was a leader for AQHA High-Point Training Level Dressage. She was the also AQHA Reserve High-Point Youth First Level Dressage champion in both 2014 and 2015. In 2016 Rosie was the AQHA High-Point winner for Youth Second Level Dressage.
Charlie was a “horse girl” from early on in life, “I was bit by the horse bug while watching a movie when I was 2 years old when I proudly proclaimed that “I want to ride the pony. I want o jump and go fast.” My mom was able to locate a local barn that did pony rides and I took my first pony ride at 24.5 months old. After having a few pony rides, the barn manager decided to make an exception and let me begin taking lessons. I have been taking lessons ever since. After having leased a few ponies, I think my favorite thing about owning a horse is being able to decide for myself what care I want to provide my horse, where I board, what vet or farrier I want to use, who I want to take lessons with or attend a clinic with, and what shows I want to attend.”
The pair’s vast experience showing in different disciplines has given Charlie some unique insight and tips that I love. “When we show with a fake tail, I like to spray the inside of her hind legs with Peppy Spray to keep the tail from getting caught and wrapped around her hind legs as she works. I also like to dab on some clear SWAT on her chestnuts, ergots, and bridle path at a show to help deter flies from head and legs; as an added bonus, the SWAT creates a more polished appearance in these areas that can otherwise appear dry or flaky.” Seriously, Peppy Spray is the best thing ever made! If you don’t have it in your barn you have to go check it out!
“My favorite memory of Rosie is from the first show I rode her at in January 2007. I was leasing Rosie at the time and had not been riding her too long. Although we were not competing at the show, my instructor wanted me to ride Rosie in the warm-up arena and around the grounds so Rosie could get some mileage in a show environment. I was a little nervous about how Rosie would handle what could sometimes be a chaotic warm-up arena; but, Rosie was solid and confident as we worked through our exercises. I was so proud of her and could not wait until we could begin showing together. When we exited the warm-up arena, several complete strangers complimented me on how good Rosie looked and how well she handled the chaos. After cooling her down and untacking back at the trailer, I offered Rosie a horse treat. She cautiously took it from my palm, rolled it around in her mouth, and then gently set it back down on the trailer’s wheel well. We repeated this several times with different kinds of treats. When I realized Rosie didn’t know what to do with a horse treat, I remember wondering if she had ever been offered a horse treat in her life before we met and I remember thinking this horse is going to love all of the care and attention I was going to give her.”
