Legato is a 19-year-old Holsteiner owned and loved immensely by Danielle. Legato lives in Pinehurst, TX over at Marlac Farms where riding is a family affair. Mom, Danielle, Daughter, Tilly, and Dad, Martien, not only ride together but share the love of this incredible sport with one another. Danielle and Tilly – who you will meet later on in the book, both train with Martien Van Der Hoeven.
Legato is a handsome bay gelding with Dalamation spots on his feet. He is by Lavaletto and out of Uttai. Danielle’s husband, Martien, surprised Danielle with him after a show in Kentucky. Shane of Sweet Oak Farm thought he would be a perfect fit for them and he was right.
Danielle grew up in Australia riding Australian Stock Horses chasing cows, so jumping was a whole new world to her. However, Legato has been an incredible confidence builder and has been the one to teach her how to jump. Even taking her to Champion in their first-ever show.
If Danielle had to describe Legato in one word it would be “precious.” He always takes care of whoever is riding him and is a sweet boy who she trusts 100%. They lovingly refer to him as a “polar bear” for his slow, lumbering gait as he’s led around the farm. His favorite treat? Cupcakes with frosting! Danielle considers Legato her “once in a lifetime” horse and is so grateful Martien surprised her with him.
Did you know when horses have their height measured that they’re measured from the ground to their withers? Their withers are kind of like their shoulders.
