Kodak | Australian Shepherd | Houston, TX Dog Portraits

Kodak is a young, handsome blue merle Australian Shepherd with two blue eyes.

Kodak happens to be my own dog. He is absolutely the stereotypical Australian Shepherd, he is absolutely crazy and hyper. He loves to play and is very vocal, his favorite thing to do is bark, at all hours of the day and night. He also loved to herd horses, which can be a bit of a problem around the barn. When he was just a puppy we had a baby horse born named Calypso. Kodak & Calypso became the best of friends and would make a game out of chasing each other, which is find when Calypso was little but now that she is big it is a little more dangerous. Although, Calypso still runs up to the fence or the front of her stall when she sees Kodak and snorts until he comes over to play. This year we welcomed a human baby into our life and Kodak was convinced the baby crying was the most terrifying thing on earth for the first few months, it took quite some time for him to realizing that the high pitched screams coming from the human baby were ok, and he has finally come around to his new brother. They are learning to be the best of friends, especially since he has now discovered that his human brother is really just a little treat dispenser who is always ready to share his snacks and food with him when Mom & Dad look away.

Australian Shepherds are known to be smart, energetic, and loyal dogs to their person. They are classified as herding dogs so you’ll find Aussies often working cattle, sheep, and other livestock.

Australian Shepherds are often confused with Border Collies. Although they share similar coat and personality traits most Aussies are thicker than the leaner Border Collie. Plus, Border Collies always have their tails while Australian Shepherds only have little nubs. This can be from a process called “docking” or some Aussies are born without them.

Although you would think that Australian Shepherds came from Australia they didn’t! They are originally from the Western United States around the 1840s during the Gold Rush. They make great dogs for those who have room for them to run or who lead an active lifestyle and plan on bringing your Aussie along.
