I had the honor of sharing Kelly’s horse Rio’s story on my 365 Days of Horses project this past year. Kelly just so happens to run a phenomenal blog called the Hunky Hanoverian where she shares her sometime rollercoaster like journey with Rio, and also talks about many other topics relating to the equestrian world. I was talking with Kelly the other day about picking the perfect outfit for Horse & Rider portraits and she put together the most amazing blog post sharing her dream outfit for Horse & Rider Portraits. I knew that I had to share this romantic look on Valentines Day, because seriously it is magical.
I always recommend having some type of inspiration for pictures, and Kelly was inspired by her obsession with Anne of Green Gables. As a young girl, she was Anne of Green Gables crazy, and even ran around trying to talk like Anne. Kelly shares, “If I was a wood nymph who got to frolic with unicorns in a white blossom covered field, this is what I would wear.”
Unfortunately Kelly’s big guy isn’t quite a unicorn in a traditional sense, but he is certainly her unicorn of a horse, I think she could frolic around in a field covered full of white flowers any day with her giant boy Rio and pull off the look she put together.
Kelly chose a soft flowing tulle skirt, and a top with delicate lace from Morning Lavender to keep things simple and romantic, but not to take away from the horse. Pair this with a pop or color using a bold lip such as MAC Hang Up Lipstick, and a whimsical hairstyle and you have the absolute perfect romantic look for your dream fairy tale session with your horse. I also found some stunning yet simple drop earrings that would help pull together this high end romantic look, and also the perfect pair of drizzle grey suede wedges from Toms. Wedges are a favorite choice of mine when it comes to portraits with your horse, because they have all of the added benefits of wearing heels, but they are way easier to walk in! When I think Anne of Green Gables, I think wild and whimsical, which I think makes a perfect excuse to add some gorgeous garland to your horse.
I know that shopping for the perfect clothes for pictures can be so overwhelming, but I want to help ease the overwhelm for my clients. I am now offering full service portrait sessions where I help pick out every little detail for your pictures, and the session fee even includes designer dress rental for your pictures. I also have a large selection of items in my client wardrobe that clients are free to use including many tulle skirts of various colors and lengths, dresses, fur wraps, and my personal favorite item, my gorgeous one of a kind long Gold Sequin Dress with an open back from one of my favorite dress designers in Houston, Renegade Bridal.
One of my favorite tips that Kelly shares is to hit up a DryBar for the perfect whimsical hairstyle for your pictures, or if you are looking for a stylist that can come to you, let me know and I can help find the perfect stylist to come right to your barn and help complete your look. Don’t forget to find the perfect accessory for your hair such as the fabulous orchids that Kelly shares on her blog or even a simple headband such as this lace piece Kelly found on Etsy.
