Skittles, well, let me tell you, she lives up to her name! I have absolutely fallen in love with this sweet girl. She is full of life and personality and even has the perfectly little round body to match her bubble personality. She is spoiled rotten by her owner, Vilma.

Vilma says that Skittles was originally trained to go Western before she came to Legacy Stables. They quickly made the transition over to hunter/jumpers with her very first trainer, Alexis, who left for Veterinary School at Auburn University. After Chloe Cosgrove returned back to Corpus Christi from her time away at school at Johnson and Whales and training horses in Germany with the Keller family, Velma took the dive into Dressage! The pair has been doing dressage with CEC Elite Training for about 2 years now and they LOVE it!

Skittles was origionally the lesson horse that Velma rode before Velma fell in love and decided to make Skittles her first horse! I love how she said they were both “middle aged post-menopausal girls looking for new BFFs. We were lucky to have found each other.” Isn’t that what having a horse is all about?! Finding the one that gets you and then suddenly it all clicks.

Skittles is pretty much the most easygoing, “unapolgetically Rubenesque in stature” as her Mom calls her, horse there is. This could be my favorite description ever of a horse! Everything is her favorite treat (well except beer, apparently she isn’t crazy about a that.)  “She goes with the flow. From Western, to Hunter/Jumper to Dressage. She makes a good little pleasure trail riding horse too. “We don’t show because we don’t have a competitive bone in either of our bodies.”

Velma got started riding when her husband bought her a gift certificate for 3 months worth of lessons for her birthday….over 10 years ago. She has been hooked ever since. Skittles was my first horse, and I just got her a year and a half ago. The best part about owning a horse is forgetting all about the stress of work when you’re at the barn.
Velma shared with me that in addition to the excellent training she receives from Chloe at CEC Elite Training, she also watches a lot of training videos! Even subscribing to an online training site in the U.K. called Horse Hero.

I love her favorite memory about Skittles, “when we were younger we used to love to go over the jumps and learn the courses. I remember we were going over a low jump but she must have thought she saw a snake because she leapt over 4 feet in the air! I barely hung on but it felt like we were flying.”
