Kaila and Monalisa DC | Haras Dos Cavaleiros | Houston,TX Equine Photographer

Monalisa DC is Kaila’s newest addition to her group of horses. Monalisa DC is a seriously stunning 3 Year Old Lusitano Mare from Haras Dos Cavaleiros in Magnolia,TX. One day Kaila was just browsing around the Haras Dos Cavaleiros website looking at the stallions, when she decided to see what they had for sale- just out of curiosity. She came across the ad for Monalisa DC, and fell involve with her, and with no intentions on buying a new horse she decided to email them regarding her availability thinking that maybe something would come out of it. “Two weeks, a small trial, many visits, a vet check, and a bank visit later… I was coming home with an imported Lusitano that I never imagined I’d have! I think there has to be a reason I came across her, whatever that reason may be.”

“Monalisa is really just an over-grown dog. She reminds of a baby monkey honestly. Everything needs to be chewed on, grabbed, or flung around, and she has the cutest, squishiest mouth ever. I’ve never had a horse with a personality like she has, or one that can be contently grazing after being turned out for the night, but as soon as I make an appearance for any reason in her pasture, it’s generally a “must get to the human as fast as I can to say hello!” from the other side of it.”

Kaila shared with me her plans for Monalisa as she grows up, “With a foundation in dressage, I plan on just making her as fancy of a western horse as I can through a traditional method of training that comes out of old California, the great basin, and places such as Idaho and Montana. It includes riding as a “hackamore horse” for 1-2 years (depending on the horses learning), then progressing into the 2-rein (containing of a hackamore underneath a very heavy weighted bit such as a Spade, or mouthpiece of similar structure), and then finally, after around the 6th year of training, closing the schooling into a “Bridle Horse”, which is the ceremonial removal of the hackamore into the Spade Bit that shouldn’t take more than a hair’s measurement of movement for the horse to respond in the softest, and most advanced, refined maneuvers.”

I love how much love and hard work Kaila puts into her horses, it is so obvious from the bond they share, to even how meticulously Kaila has planned out and researched exactly what she hopes to transform Monalisa into one day.
