Emily, her owner, currently boards Sparkle at Janine Mendez’s Barn in Heletos, TX. Sparkle has been at Janine’s since she was three. Her previous boarder did not give her an appropriate amount of attention, and stopped paying board. Janine had those owners sign ownership of Sparkle over to Emily and Emily’s parents later bought her. Emily then began to work on Dressage with Sparkle but she explains, “Sparkle and I have had a rough time together, I have been riding her for four years, owning her for two, and in those years she has torn ligaments and was off for several months, then at a show she spooked and ran backwards with me, tearing her meniscus and we are still working on getting her stride to be even (she is completely healed though). We ride three times a week at least.”

This strong horse loves apples.

Emily says, “I have always been the “horse crazy girl” since I was little and it’s not something that went away, in fact I will be attending William Woods University to continue my riding career. I started taking western lessons when I was five but switched to dressage when I was about 8 years old. I have only owned Sparkle for two years, but have been working with various “project” horses for four or five years, working with four now. My favorite thing about owning horses is the bond you create with them, even if you don’t officially own a horse, they still grow to love you when you take care of them and show them affection.”

Emily also shared her favorite memory with Sparkle. “It is a sad memory, but one that will always be with me, on the weekend of Father’s Day, I was showing Sparkle at the San Antonio Rose Palace, it was Sunday morning and the we were just waiting for the storm to arrive. It was Sparkle’s first overnight show and we were warming up when the sky opened up, spooking Sparkle and causing her to take off backwards with me. She showed up lame in her hind left moments later, causing us to scratch the rest of the day. After weeks of rest and no improvement, we took her to the vet only to discover that she tore her meniscus and would be off for six months at least. After five months, she qualified for a trial of stem-cell treatment, where her meniscus healed in two months. In all that time, I learned how to work with her on manners and on rehabilitating an injured horse. Through that time, our bond got closer and, yes it is sad, but she has taught me so much through this time that I wouldn’t change what happened, because she and I have grown so close because of it and I wouldn’t be the rider I am today without experiencing this with her.”
