ESQUIRE| 7 YEAR OLD AMERICAN WARMBLOOD GELDING| HOUSTON, TX

Squirrel, Esquire, is an American warmblood gelding. Squirrel is owned by Cheryl Lawerence and trains at Memorial Park Hunters.

Squirrel is a Gray colored American warmblood gelding. Squirrel’s color is not the only thing that makes him distinguishable from other horses though. Cheryl shares that “Squirrel has a sweet and patient personality. He is consistent, always coming out of his stall the same. When he is showing it is like there is elevator music playing in his head, he is not phased by the arena or the courses he is asked to do.”

Cheryl found Squirrel through Patty Roberts with Memorial Park Hunters at the end of December 2023. Meeting Squirrel for the first time was a magical moment for Cheryl. She was struggling with riding because of her previous horse and was about to give up horseback riding. When Patty Roberts came to the barn with Squirrel, Cheryl noticed after he looked a little rough. However, Cheryl felt a connection with him and decided to give him a ride. Cheryl will never forget that first ride on him because it was a reminder to her about why she loved riding so much. Cheryl explains that every time she rides Squirrel his sweet and patient personality radiates from him.

One thing about Squirrel is that he can never resist an ice cold crunchy carrot. Every time he sees the orange treat he can’t help but get excited. Squirrel will just patiently wait trying to contain his excitement when he sees Cheryl coming with his favorite snack.

Cheryl fell in love with horses when she was a child, but her mother was scared of horses so she would only get to go a trail ride every year or so during the annual family vacation. When Cheryl was in her mid-fifties, her sister-in-law, who breeds and trains horses for barrel racing, mentioned to Cheryl that her neighbor was a hunter jumper trainer. Cheryl immediately got interested and told her sister in law she wanted to try it, and asked if she could tag along. Cheryl shares that this was the beginning of living her dreams. Cheryl explains that her “favorite thing about owning horses is the interaction with the horse, the challenge of communicating through the turn of my head, the slight pressure from my hands and/or my legs and the horse’s response.”

Cheryl’s favorite memory with Squirrel was when the pair first met. It was a time she will never forget. Although their bond is still new, Cheryl knows they will make lifelong memories together.
