Trader, Tradin’ Paint, is a registered APHA Gelding. He was bred by Paint Quarter Horses. He is trained by Laura Mendoza of Little Bay Farm.
Trader is a beautiful chestnut Paint horse with a white spot under his tummy. One of the first things that people notice about him is just how adorable he is. It’s a word that comes up time and time again when people talk about Trader, and it’s not hard to see why. He has a sweet and friendly disposition that just draws people in.
Despite his charming nature, Trader does have a bit of a mischievous streak. He loves being with his people, and he’ll do just about anything to get their attention. If he sees something left on his stall door, he’ll pick it up and wave it around, just to see if anyone is watching. Then, with a flick of his head, he’ll toss it on the floor and wait for someone to come over and give him some love.
Liz, Trader’s owner, found Trader through an online ad when he was in Idaho Falls. Despite never meeting him in person, Liz was immediately drawn to Trader’s charming personality and adorable appearance. In January, Trader made the long journey from Idaho Falls to Houston, arriving looking as furry as a bear due to the cold weather. Liz welcomed him with open arms and the two have been inseparable ever since. It’s been four wonderful years together, and Liz knows that Trader has a home with her forever.
When it comes to treats, Trader is not a picky eater at all. In fact, he’ll gobble up just about anything that he thinks is a special treat. However, there is one particular treat that Trader simply can’t get enough of, and that’s carrots. As soon as he sees Liz approaching with a bag of carrots in hand, Trader gets positively giddy with excitement. He’ll whinny and nudge at Liz, urging her to hurry up and give him his tasty snack. And if Liz is ever too slow in bringing him his beloved carrots, Trader isn’t shy about letting her know with a playful whinny or two.
The pair have had many amazing accomplishments together, but perhaps one of their proudest moments was being crowned the Champion of their hunter division at Pin Oak in 2022. It was an incredible achievement and one that Liz and Trader had worked incredibly hard to earn. Throughout their journey, Liz had put in countless hours of training and practice with Trader, and their hard work had truly paid off.
Liz’s love for horses began at a young age and has been a constant source of joy and grounding in her life ever since. She was always fascinated by the grace and beauty of these majestic animals, and she knew from a very young age that riding horses was something she wanted to pursue. As she got older, Liz became more and more involved in the world of horseback riding, and she quickly discovered that it was a true passion of hers. Even as she grows older, Liz knows that horses will always have a special place in her heart. In fact, she’s already made plans to keep a horse for the rest of her life, even if she’s no longer able to ride, just so she can continue to enjoy the simple pleasures of brushing and feeding her equine companion.
One of Liz’s favorite memories with Trader is a playful moment that perfectly encapsulates his mischievous personality. In the summertime, Trader is often required to wear a fly mask to keep the pesky insects at bay. However, it seems that Trader isn’t a huge fan of the mask, and has a clever way of getting rid of it. Liz recalls a time when Trader managed to convince the horse in the adjacent turnout paddock to pull off his fly mask and then proceeded to stomp it into the sand to make it harder for Liz to find. It was a hilarious moment that Liz will never forget and one that perfectly showcases Trader’s cunning and playful nature.

Portraits for Charity was an idea Karinda dreamt up to help give back to families impacted by Childhood Cancer in memory of her husband’s sister Jessica. During the 2023 Pin Oak Charity Horse Show Karinda photographed around 150 Horses and Dogs and was able to donate just under $15,000 to Candlelighter’s Houston.
