Meet Rubi, also known as “McKay’s Distraction” in the show ring. Rubi is a 7-year-old Oldenburg bay mare with a white star & snip along her face. Rubi lives at Cedar Haven Stables where she and her beloved owner & rider, Kelsey train with Megan McKay.
Rubi was bought and imported sight unseen in 2017 by Cedar Haven’s barn owner as a very green, extremely talented, 3-year-old. Upon her arrival, Rubi spent years in training as a young prospect to be a nice hunter for her owner. So much to my surprise, Rubi was gifted to Kelsey for Christmas in 2020!
Rubi is described as a complete sweetheart on the ground but can be very quirky under the saddle. Spooky, looky, requires a certain type of rider to keep her happy or she will constantly kick out at the leg & refuse to go forward!
Although when it comes to treats, Rubi is not picky in this department. She will take anything that is tossed her way!
Kelsey got into horseback riding when her parents signed her up for horse camp when she turned 7. She has had horses ever since. She shares that her favorite thing about owning horses is the bond shared between horse and rider.
