Kit | Red Heeler | White Background Dog Portraits | Katy, TX

Kit is a 12-year-old Red Heeler. She has probably visited more barns than any other dog or horse that we photographed at the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show. You might wonder, why would a dog go to so many barns? Well, Kit is owned by an equine veterinarian, Dr. Stone.

Dr. Stone is an Equine Veterinarian at Katy Equine, oftentimes equine vets make visits to their patient’s barns. If you have a dog or a cat, you know that you can just put them in the car and take them to the vet, but loading up horses to visit the vet isn’t always that easy. Veterinarians that work on horses have a truck or SUV that is full of all of the tools that they need so they can pick up and visit their patients anywhere.

If you have had Dr. Stone from Katy Equine visit your barn, chances are you have met his partner in crime Kit. Kit has made her rounds at soo many barns all around Houston. I remember when she used to visit Windy Knoll Farm when I was riding there and watching her find all of the Jolly Balls and run around playing with them. Jolly Balls are these giant rubber balls, that are bigger than Kit’s head, some horses play with them in their stalls or pastures just like a dog. However, there are always those barn dogs that love to sneak into horse stalls and take the balls for themselves. When Kit isn’t busy stealing Jolly Balls you can find her with a tennis ball in her mouth penitently waiting for someone to play ball with her.

Kit suffered a fibrocartilaginous embolism in 2016 so she doesn’t get to run around quite like she used to, but she still enjoys a visit out to the shows or barns from time to time. You will also probably notice that Kit has a white eye, sometimes as horses and dogs age their eyes can become cloudy and turn a white color as they lose their vision. It tends to look pretty bright and shiny in portraits because the lights tend to light up their eyes. If you are ever around an animal with a white or silver looking eye, just remember that they may have trouble seeing out of that eye so it is always best to talk to them first before you pet them so that they know you are there.

Did you know that Heeler dogs are a type of breed to work with cattle specifically? They are also among the most intelligent dog breeds around.
