365 Days of Horses | Violet | Bandera, TX Fjord Horse

PF GRA VIOLET | 5 YEAR OLD MARE FJORD | BANDERA, TX

Violet, PF Gra Violet, is a 5 year old gray dun, mare Fjord from very old solid bloodlines. She is a mare of medium build and gigantic personality.

Her owner, Kelly, shares, “Violet, through no fault of her own, went through several owners in a short period of time. When I bought her she’d been in an accident where a cougar chased several horses through a fence and she had been kept in a stall for several months to try to see if she would heal and be sound. Luckily she came off the trailer when she arrived in Texas and she was sound and has been so since she arrived.”

She now lives at Landsdrop Ranch, but has not yet been started under saddle, that will happen later this year. She was brought to the ranch in Montana where Kelly’s stallion was standing at stud. She’d been casually looking for another broodmare and liked the gray Fjords, so when she found out Violet was for sale she took a chance and bought her unseen. Not the recommended way to buy horses, but Fjords can be rare exceptions. However, even she says it is still, better to go meet them!

Violet has however been a great mom, since she came to the farm pregnant she delivered and has been amazing! Kelly says the best word to describe her is “impish” and that she will eat anything you give her! To Kelly, Violet is into everything. She can’t help it. She cannot be left tied unattended or she will work the knot until she’s free – and she can untie it quickly! She will pull the hose out of the water trough, pick up any tools that might be laying around, and is generally “helpful.” When they were prepping for the photo shoot, Kelly finished her bath, tied her and went to get another horse and by the time I came back she had slipped her halter and rolled in the mud. So they both got a second bath and it was freezing out!

Kelly shares, “I always, always wanted horses but couldn’t have them because we lived in the suburbs and my parents understood more about zoning laws than I did as a child. When I was 25 and finally had a job that would pay me enough to buy and keep a horse, I moved out to the country and got my first horses. That was in 2000. Over the years, the things I’ve wanted from the horses have changed as I’ve become interested in different sports, activities, breeding, so I’ve added some new horses. Now I’m focusing on the Fjord breed because there are so few in Texas and they are really one of the best-kept secrets in the horse world.”
