365 Days of Horses | Shire Horse | Hermann Farm and Museum

GORGEOUS | SHIRE MARE | HERMANN,MO

Gorgeous is a Shire Mare that lives at Hermann Farm and Museum in Herman,MO. She was bred by Jenson Shires in Nebraska.

Gorgeous is a noble mare, actually noble lady. She is an iconic representation of the breed, and is quite the star in every single picture. Gorgeous comes from some fine stock and with her noble personality, I am almost certain that she knows this. She plays an important role at Hermann Farms representing the Shire breed and carrying on their legacy. The Shire breed’s numbers have been declining and there are very few Shire Horses left around the world.

Hermann Farms and Museum is located on almost 200 acres of farmland in Mid Missouri. The horses are trained by Merrill McLaughlin. The farm has visitors each day that come to see these huge and majestic animals and learn about their history. Gorgeous stands as a representative for all of the silent Draft Horses that once plowed the fields in Gasconade County and across America. Out of all of the Shire Horses at Hermann Farm, Gorgeous is the best to ride and works well with riding demonstrations during tours of the farm. She is an easy learner and a “straight A student” when it comes to her lessons. Gorgeous is an excellent dual purpose horse and has the most agreeable nature. She is an awesome representative of her breed to show to visitors at the history farm, and teach visitors of the importance of the draft in early agricultural use.

Hermann Farms is on a mission to save the critically endangered Shire breed and they work with Jenson Shires in Nebraska to breed and help perpetuate the breed. Hermann Farm Museum is a living history farm outside of the historic town of Hermann, MO. We felt the need to begin a mission to rescue this heritage breed which is currently on the endangered list of draft breeds. Our favorite thing about owning these horses is showing them off to visitors. Many do not realize this breed is the largest of the drafts and larger than Clydesdales.

“What is so special about this huge draft horse is her gentle nature and way of putting her head on your chest to nuzzle and be petted. Shires are considered the Gentle Giants of the horse kingdom and Gorgeous shows this in every way. She is the perfect example in demeanor and looks of the breed standard.”
