SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT | 14 YEAR OLD THOROUGHBRED MARE | SPRINGFIELD,MO

Mint, Second Star to the Right, is a 14 year old mare that lives at Katalyst Sporthorses just outside of Springfield,MO.

Mint is your typical sassy mare to the max. The sassiest mare you will probably ever meet. Crystal, shares how much heart this spunky mare has. She loves to jump, and will jump just about anything. She prefers to run, unchecked, at fences and would do so all day and be completely happy. She knows when more beginner type riders are on her, and will take it easier, but her patience doesn’t last long, especially when jumping is involved.

Crystal does jumpers with Mint, as she is far too crazy to do hunters, and Crystal is not crazy enough to event. Crystal’s favorite thing about riding her is how much heart she has for her job, she really enjoys it. Mint is happiest when she is jumping and there is no stop in her, no matter how she gets to the jump, she will always go over it. Crystal first found Mint around 3 years ago when a friend and her were looking for a project horse to go in on together. Crystal’s friend found Mint, she was broken down and skinny from a college kid that didn’t have time or the money for her any longer. They ended up getting a great deal on her, and hoped to make a little bit of money back, but Crystal fell in love.

This ridiculously sassy mare loves Purina Apple and Oats and Nicker Makers.

Mint’s biggest accomplishment is giving Crystal so much confidence and teaching her to fly again, that is why Crystal named her Second Star to the Right, “she brought me back to Neverland.”

Crystal has owned horses her entire life, she started taking lessons around the age of five, to give her something to do. Crystal loves building that relationship with a horse and learning from them, but also teaching them in turn.

“There are many memories that make me want to strangle her, laugh, cry, or all the above at the same time, but my favorite is shortly after I bought her. I was headed towards an oxer. Now it wasn’t big, like at all, but in my mind it was super wide! I struggle with my confidence and I kinda lost my brain a little. I pulled Mint out of it a couple of times, but that just shamed me so I headed towards it once more. She asked me if we were actually going to jump it and I said yes… right at the base of the jump. She popped up over it in the most awkward jump imaginable, I landed behind the saddle, and fell off. She turned and looked at me like, “can you try to be less stupid next time?””

Crystal shares, “The only trick about grooming is to not take shortcuts. If you use the three body brushes, hoofpicks, and a tail and mane brush every day you will almost never have to bathe a horse. Unless she’s white/grey. Then you always have to bathe them.”
