DOCS LITTLE LOKELANI | 10 YEAR OLD QUARTER HORSE MARE | GEORGETOWN,KY

Loke, Docs Little Lokelani, is a 20 year old Quarter Horse. Loke is the granddaughter of Peppy San Badger, who traces to Leo. She has a lot of cutting horse blood. Loke was bred by Robert Cherry on Oahu.

Loke, lives with her owner Ashley at her property in Georgetown, KY. Loke is now retired but back in the day she was trained by Ashley. Ashley shares, “Lokelani is my most trusted riding horse. Her personality hasn’t always been the best though. From the time she was two she suffered with ovarian cysts. It took years for the vets to finally make the diagnosis. I was told many times to sell her but I never gave up on her. Once her painful ovaries were removed her personality rebounded. She’s still not a warm and cuddly mare but it has definitely mellowed her out. She has always been a one person horse and I’m lucky she chose me. She is also my go to horse for giving pony rides to my nephews and niece, I know I can always trust her.”

Lokelani developed a Keratoma in her left front hoof last year so with the surgery and recovery, Ashley decided to retire her. Ashley shares that she more than earned her retirement. Lokelani was the first horse that Ashley broke and trained herself, she was the easiest horse to train and was pretty much born broke. She was a willing horse and was always willing to try whatever Ashley asked of her, as long as it wasn’t walking through a creek. Although, she was a short, downhill, Quarter Horse, she was an amazing jumper that never knocked down any poles. She was started as a Reining Horse, but did everything English and Western.

Ashley says that Loke found her. Ashley wasn’t looking for another horse. A lady had gotten her as a weanling, as her first horse. Loke ended up in the stall next to Ashley’s gelding and Ashley and Loke struck up a friendship. Unfortunately her owner didn’t know how to train a young horse, and Loke soon became too much to handle. Her owner had two big name trainers work with her and they both gave up on her, as a last resort Ashley was asked if she would work with her, and Ashley gladly accepted. “It was like Lokelani was waiting for me. We were meant to be together. She never displayed the bad behavior she had with the other trainers. I’ve had her ever since. It’s been 19 1/2 years.”

This trustworthy horse loves to eat just about anything.

In the pair’s first show ever, Loke was just two years old, and they did a bareback class. They won it! Loke, was literally bombproof, once Ashley was riding when a neighbor set off explosives. Ashley was more scared than Loke when it happened.

It truly is amazing how accident prone some horses can be, “Lokelani was a bit accident prone as a yearling. She gave herself 3 major wounds within a year. She broke off a piece of bone on the bridge of her nose. She cut her chest open and the biggest one is on her side. She has a foot long scar on her barrel. I think the scars fit her personality. I learned a lot about wound care that year!”

Ashley started riding in middle school after years of begging her parents. Ashley got her first horse 22 years ago. Ashley loves having horses because they calm and relax her. They bring her a sense of deep peace.

“My favorite memory is a trail ride when she was three. I was riding with my husband and a couple friends and we had gone to the top of the mountains in Kunia (on Oahu). We were walking along a beautiful plateau overlooking Pearl Harbor, It happened to be when they were filming the movie Pearl Harbor, and a bunch of world war two bomber planes flew over filming a scene. You could see all the details on the planes. It was so surreal and cool!”

Ashley shares that Horse Vacuums are the best! I am going to have to look into these, especially for my big wooly guy in the winter.
