Texas Horse Photographer | Calypso The Unicorn Cake Smash

Many of you probably remember when I did my horse Lucy’s very own maternity session! Complete with flowers and a long flowing maternity gown that was blowing in the wind, reminiscent of the many maternity pictures you see of people! When her foal Calypso turned 1, I knew that I had to do something extra special to celebrate. I decided to go all out and plan and design her very own cake smash. That’s right, a birthday cake smash for a horse. I ordered confetti balloons, a one balloon, rainbow banner, cake topper, and even colorful hair extensions for her tail…oh and I almost forgot, the most important part, a unicorn horn. After all, she is my little unicorn.

This year has been a crazy whirlwind photographing horses from all over the country for my 365 Days of Horses project, so in true photographer’s child fashion her pictures were a few weeks late!

Calypso is an Oldenburg out of my mare Cayenne (Go Lightly x Cabalito) and by the stallion Supremat OLD.

I knew I wanted these pictures to take place in a studio like setting just like any of my Baby Planner clients with kiddos that are turning 1. My husband and brother in law helped to hang up white wood, on the walls and floor of our house that we are building. So yes, I brought my horse into the house, and she walked right through the door like it was no big deal! She didn’t even flinch when she sniffed the balloons and actually leaned up on them multiple times.

Here is the recipe I used to make the cake for the Horse Cake Smash

3 Cups of Unsweetened Applesauce

3 Cups of Oatmeal

1 Cup of Flour

1 Cup of Molasses

I mixed everything together until it was a thick dough like consistency, and poured it into a well greased pan. I baked it in the over at 400 degrees for around 20 minutes.

For the Horse Safe Icing I took 1 Banana and mashed it all up and added blue food coloring.

Calypso isn’t too crazy about treats, and is quite a slow eater,  so it didn’t surprise me that she was less than excited about eating the cake, I ended up having to add some of her feed to the top to entice her. After we finished up I offered some pieces of it to the big horses and they went crazy over it!
